Passage Four

K9 level

1. Edgar felt quite excited when he thought about his first swim of the summer.

2. With the sun shining so strongly, he was sure the sea would be warm enough.

3. He walked quickly along the sea-front towards the stairs that led down to the sand.

4. He smiled happily at the people around him.

5. He had just smiled and waved his hat at an elderly lady when a man with a camera grabbed his arm and stopped him.

6. Edgar heard a faint buzzing sound coming from the camera.

7. The man told Edgar that his photo in bright color would be ready in just a moment if he would wait for a little while.

8. Then the buzzing stopped, and the photographer handed the photo to Edgar. He noticed the bright blue of his shirt filling almost half of the picture.

9. The man said it cost seventy pence and added that it was the best bargain Edgar would find on his holiday.

10. Edgar repeated the price and asked if that was for the photo.

11. The man explained that the normal price was eighty-five pence, but he was offering a special discount for one person. He said this was the best deal Edgar would get in Chadwell.

12. Edgar replied that the man would need to offer a better price.

13. It was a good photo, Edgar thought, so bright and clear.

14. His hat was held high, and he was smiling at the old lady, whose arm and handbag appeared in the lower corner of the photo.

15. He had no idea that he had been photographed.

16. He thought he looked like a very good-looking man in the picture.

17. The photographer said the photo was just as good as any studio photo that would cost several pounds. He added that it was even better in some ways because it was so natural. He repeated that it cost seventy pence.

18. Edgar argued that he had never paid so much for a photo before. He said it wasnt worth that much and added that he didnt need it. He offered twenty-five pence instead.

19. The man refused, explaining that each color photo cost him 50p to make, which was the price of the empty frame.

20. Edgar interrupted, saying the man wanted to make a profit of forty percent and offered 50p as his final price.

21. The man asked to see the photo again.

22. He then suddenly grabbed the photo from Edgars hand, saying he couldnt spend any more time on this deal.

23. He said it was seventy pence or he would keep the photo.

24. Edgar told him to keep it. He turned, looked out at the sea for a moment, and then walked quickly away.
