Passage Two (K9 level)
1. In 1666, London was struck by a terrible disease. 2. Every week, thousands of people died. 3. The disease was spread by fleas, which lived in clothing. 4. People sneezed when they started feeling sick. 5. They would get a high fever and die within a week. 6. Eyam is a village in northern England. 7. The people there heard about the terrible disease in London. 8. They were relieved that London was so far away. 9. One day, a man arrived from London. 10. He had many different things to sell. 11. One of the things he brought was cloth. 12. The cloth had the words “made in London” on it. 13. Two days later, a boy sneezed. 14. He said that his head hurt. 15. At first, no one paid much attention, but soon he was in bed with a high fever. 16. The next day, the boy suddenly died, and two more people started sneezing. 17. The villagers quickly held a meeting to decide what to do. 18. An old man suggested that if people left the village, they might carry the disease with them. 19. He warned that the disease could spread to other places, and thousands would die. 20. He stressed that they needed to make sure others outside the village didn’t catch the disease. 21. The people of Eyam agreed with the old man. 22. By doing this, they saved people in other villages from the disease. 23. In the end, 40% of the people in Eyam died from the disease. 24. The disease eventually disappeared. 25. Those who survived were able to visit people outside the village once again.
