Passage Two (K4 level) 1.In the year 1666, there was a terrible disease in
London. 2.Thousands of people died every week. 3.The disease was carried by fleas, which live in
clothes. 4.When people started to feel ill, they sneezed. 5.Then they had a high temperature and in less than
a week, they died. 6.The village of Eyamis in the north of England. 7.People there heard of the terrible disease in
London. 8.They were very happy that London was so far away. 9.One day a man arrived from London. 10.He brought with him lots of different things to sell. 11.Among these things, there was some cloth. 12.On it were the words "made in London." 13.Two days later, a boy sneezed. 14.He said that he had a headache. 15.Nobody worried much, but soon he was in bed with
a high temperature. 16.The next day, the boy suddenly died, and another
two people started to sneeze. 17.At once, the village people held a meeting to
discuss what to do. 18.An old man explained that if people ran away
from the village, they might carry the disease with them. 19.He added that the disease would then be carried
to other places and thousands of people might die. 20.He insisted that they must make sure other
people outside their village didn’t pick up the terrible disease. 21.The people of Eyam agreed with the old man. 22.In this way, they saved the population of the
other villages from the terrible disease. 23.In the end, 40% of the population of Eyam died
from the disease. 24.The disease itself died out. 25.The people who were still living were able to
