Passage Three (K4 level) 1.Ralph Depalma had won many races. 2.But he was at his best in a race that he lost. 3.The race was the 1912 “Indy”500. 4.That’s one of the biggest car races in the United
States. 5.Depalma was driving a large German car. 6.As soon as the race started,he pulled out in
front. 7.As the race went on,he kept the first place. 8.And he was far ahead of Dawson,the man in the
second place. 9.When the race was almost over,some people got up
and left. 10.Why stay?They thought they were sure they knew
who would win. 11.But things did not go as they thought. 12.A strange noise came from Depalma’s car. 13.It slowed down.Something was wrong. 14.Depalma knew his car wouldn’t go far. 15.His only hope was that he would make it to the
finish. 16.But on his last lap,the car stopped. 17.Dawson’s car roared by. 18.Depalma saw it go by. 19.He knew he couldn’t win now. 20.But he thought he can finish the race. 21.And he got out of his car. 22.So did his assistant. 23.They began to push the car to the finish. 24.Dawson went by them again and again. 25.He was on his last lap.He was going to win. 26.The people shouted.Depalma and his friend didn’t
care. 27.They went on pushing. 28.At first all eyes were on Dawson. 29.He crossed the line. 30.And the race was over.He won! 31.Then people saw a car crawing up to the
track,they began to yell and shout. 32.Depalma and his friend pushed on. 33.At last the car crossed the line. 34.By then the people at the track were yelling for
them. 35.They shouted more than they had for Dawson. 36.This was a different kind of winner—one who
