Passage Four (K4 level) 1. Edgar felt quite excited
at the thought of his first swim of the summer. 2. With the sun shining
down so strongly, the sea was certain to be warm enough. 3. He walked quickly along
the sea-front towards the steps that led on to the sands. 4. He smiled cheerfully at
the people. 5. He had just smiled and
waved his hat to an elderly lady when a man with a camera caught his arm and
stopped him. 6. Edgar heard a little
buzzing noise from the camera. 7. The man told Edgar that
his photo in bright color would be ready in just one moment if he pleased. 8. Then the buzzing
stopped, and the cameraman handed the photo over, and Edgar saw the bright blue
of his shirt half filling the picture. 9. The man said that it
cost seventy pence and added that it was the bargain of Edgar’s holiday. 10. Edgar repeated the
price and asked if it was for the photo. 11. The man explained that
they were normally eighty-five pence, but he was making a cut-price offer for
one person, adding that it was the best price Edgar would get in Chadwell. 12. Edgar replied that the
man would have to make a better offer. 13. It was a good photo
though, Edgar thought, so bright and clear. 14. His hat was held high,
and he was smiling happily at the old lady, whose arm and handbag came into a
lower corner. 15. He had had no idea that
he was being snapped. 16. He thought he was
really quite a good-looking man. 17. The cameraman said that
it was as good as any studio job that would cost pounds and added that it was
better in a way because it was so natural. He repeated that it cost seventy
pence. 18. Edgar argued that he
had never paid so much for a photo in his life, said that it wasn’t worth that
kind of money, and added that he didn’t need it. He offered twenty-five pence. 19. The man refused,
explaining that each of the color photos cost him 50p, which was the price of
the blank frame. 20. Edgar interrupted,
saying that the man wanted a profit of forty percent and offering 50p as his
final price. 21. The man asked to see
the photo again. 22. He then suddenly took
the photo out of Edgar’s hand, saying that he couldn’t spend any more time on
it. 23. He added that it was
seventy pence or he would keep it. 24. Edgar told him to keep
it. He turned, looked out to sea, then walked quickly away. 生词表(New
