Passage Five (K4 level) 1. A friend of mine named
Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas present. 2. On Christmas Eve, when
Paul came out of his office, he noticed a street urchin walking around the
shining car. 3. The boy asked Paul if it
was his car. 4. Paul replied that it was
and explained that his brother had given it to him for Christmas, which
surprised the boy. 5. The boy exclaimed in
surprise and said that Paul’s brother had given it to him without it costing
him anything. He then started to say he wished for something but hesitated. 6. Paul assumed he knew
what the boy was going to wish for. 7. He thought the boy would
wish to have a brother like Paul’s. 8. However, what the boy
said next greatly surprised Paul. 9. The boy said that he
wished he could be a brother like that. 10. Paul looked at the boy
in astonishment and then asked him if he would like to take a ride in the car,
to which the boy excitedly responded that he would love to. 11. After a short ride, the
boy, his eyes shining, asked Paul if he could drive in front of his house. 12. Paul smiled slightly,
thinking he understood what the boy wanted. 13. He believed the boy
wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. 14. However, Paul soon
realized he was wrong again. 15. The boy asked Paul to
stop near a pair of steps. 16. The boy ran up the
steps quickly. 17. After a while, Paul heard
the boy coming back, but this time he was not moving fast. 18. The boy was carrying
his little brother, who was crippled. 19. He placed his brother
down on the steps and pointed toward the car. 20. The boy told his
brother that it was the car he had described earlier. 21. He explained that
Paul’s brother had given it to him for Christmas without costing him anything. 22. The boy then promised
his brother that one day he would give him a car just like it so he could see
for himself all the wonderful things in the Christmas windows that he had
described. 23. Paul got out of the car
and helped lift the boy’s little brother into the front seat. 24. The older brother, with
shining eyes, climbed in beside him, and the three of them began an
