Passage Seven (K4 level)
1. Tom had tried many ways
to be ill. 2. He didn’t wear a sweater when he
should, and two days earlier, he had walked in the rain without his shoes. 3. He remembered that
Debbie had once told him about a boy in her class who liked being away from
school. 4. According to Debbie, the
boy would rub the end of the thermometer until it went up to 39℃ and then put it in his
mouth, making his mother think he was really ill. 5. Tom tried doing that
that morning, but the thermometer never went above 35℃, even after he rubbed it
for ten minutes. 6. He then held the
thermometer next to the light on his desk, and it went up to 40℃. 7. He thought he would put
it in his mouth and walk downstairs like that. 8. He believed his mother
would take it out and be worried when she saw he was rather ill. 9. However, he hadn’t known the thermometer
would be so hot. 10. As soon as he put it
into his mouth, he burnt his tongue. 11. He spat the thermometer
