Passage Eight (K4 level) 1. Some people remember
things by writing notes to themselves. 2. Then they leave the
notes in obvious places, such as on the table or on the floor in the middle of
the living room. 3. The author didn’t think they liked to write
notes to themselves. 4. They mentioned that most
of the time they lost the notes or forgot to look at them until it was too
late. 5. They preferred to use an
alarm clock to remind themselves of what they should do. 6. They said they had ten
alarm clocks in their house. 7. They added that the
clocks could remind them about things. 8. For example, they
explained that if they had to make a telephone call at a certain time, they
would set an alarm clock to go off a few minutes early and put the clock by the
telephone. 9. Or, if they wanted to
watch a certain television programme, they would set an alarm clock at the
right time and place it on top of the TV set. 10. They claimed they could
remember almost anything if they used their clocks. 11. However, they admitted
that sometimes an alarm clock went off and they didn’t know what it meant. 12. They always remembered
setting it but couldn’t recall why they set it. 13. They noted that if the
clock was by the telephone, they might have set it to remind themselves to call
someone, but they couldn’t be sure. 14. They also considered
that they might have set it to remind themselves that somebody was supposed to
call them at a certain time. 生词表(New
