Passage Five (K9 level)
1. A boy named Paul received an expensive car from his brother as a Christmas gift. 2. On Christmas Eve, as Paul left his office, he saw a young boy wandering around the shiny car. 3. The boy asked Paul if the car belonged to him. 4. Paul told him that it was indeed his, explaining that his brother had given it to him as a Christmas gift, which amazed the boy. 5. The boy, surprised, said that Paul’s brother had given it to him without any cost. He started to say something but stopped for a moment. 6. Paul figured out what the boy was about to wish for. 7. He thought the boy would wish he had a brother like Paul’s. 8. However, the boy’s words next took Paul completely by surprise. 9. The boy said that he wished he could be a brother like that. 10. Paul stared at the boy in amazement and then asked if he wanted to take a ride in the car. The boy eagerly said yes. 11. After a brief ride, the boy, his eyes sparkling, asked Paul to drive by his house. 12. Paul smiled faintly, thinking he understood the boy’s wish. 13. He assumed the boy wanted to show his neighbors he was riding in a fancy car. 14. But Paul quickly realized he had misunderstood. 15. The boy asked Paul to stop near a set of steps. 16. The boy ran up the steps swiftly. 17. After a short while, Paul heard the boy coming back, but he was walking slowly this time. 18. The boy was carrying his little brother, who had a disability. 19. He gently placed his brother on the steps and pointed at the car. 20. The boy explained to his brother that it was the car he had told him about earlier. 21. He explained that Paul’s brother had given it to him as a Christmas gift without spending any money. 22. The boy then promised his brother that one day he would buy him a car just like it, so he could see all the beautiful things in the Christmas displays the boy had been describing. 23. Paul got out of the car and helped lift the little brother into the front seat. 24. The older brother, eyes shining with excitement, climbed in next to him, and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride.
