1.Tom had tried many different ways to make himself sick

2. He didn't wear a sweater when he should have, and two days ago, he walked in the rain without his shoes on.

3. He remembered that Debbie once told him about a boy in her class who liked to stay home from school.

4. According to Debbie, the boy would rub the end of the thermometer until it reached 39°℃, then put it in his mouth, making his mom think he was really sick.

5. Tom tried doing that that morning, but the thermometer never went above 35°℃, even after he rubbed it for ten minutes.

6.Then, he held the thermometer next to the light on his desk, and it went up to 40°℃.

7.He thought he could put it in his mouth and walk downstairs like that.

8. He believed his mom would take the thermometer out and be worried when she saw that he was quite sick.

9. However, he didn't know the thermometer would be so hot.

10. As soon as he put it in his mouth, he burnt his tongue.

11. He spat the thermometer out.

12. It fell on the floor but didn't break.

13. He decided that he needed to come up with a better plan to get his mom and dad back together.
