Passage Twenty-seven

1. It was Sunday, and Tom was staying at home.

2. After breakfast, he went out into the garden and played quietly by himself.

3. There were no kids around, and he was used to playing alone quietly.

4. He played with Bobby, the dog.

5. He climbed up and down the tree.

6. Sometimes a bird would come down to perch on top of the doghouse.

7. Then Tom would have the greatest fun by throwing a stone or something at it.

8. Though he never made it, he did like doing this kind of thing.

9. Now Tom had been in the garden for half an hour.

10. Suddenly a crack was heard, and the little boy began crying.

11. His mother looked through the kitchen window and asked what was the matter with Tom.

12. Tom ran into the kitchen.

13. Tom sobbed and told his mother that he had broken Bobby’s plate and didn’t know it was so fragile.

14. His mother put her arms round him and said not to feel so sad, that they had other plates for Bobby, and asked how he had broken that one.

15. Tom explained that he had thrown it at a bird but missed, and it had gone straight to the plate.

16. In Tom’s hand was his father’s gold pocket watch!
