Passage Twenty-eight

（K4 level）

1. Mr. Smith was ill and he went to see a doctor.

2. The doctor asked him to put out his tongue, and then he said that it was OK and that he could put his tongue back now.

3. The doctor said that there was nothing wrong with him, but that he had a problem: he seldom took exercise.

4. Mr. Smith said that he didn’t think so.

5. The doctor told him not to tell him what he thought, and that he knew what he needed. He added that he saw a lot of people like him.

6. He said that none of them got any exercise, that they sat in offices all day and in front of the television in the evening.

7. He told Mr. Smith that he must walk quickly for at least 20 minutes a day.

8. Mr. Smith said that the doctor didn’t understand and that he took enough exercise every day.

9. The doctor told him that he didn’t want to hear any excuse.

10. The doctor said that he must find time for exercise and that if he didn’t, he would get fat and have health problems.

11. Mr. Smith said that he walked every day.

12. The doctor replied that he knew what kind of walking that was.

13. The doctor explained that Mr. Smith walked a few metres to the bus stop from his house, a few more metres from the bus stop to his office, and a few more metres from his office to his dining room for lunch and back.

14. The doctor added that that wasn’t a real walk and that he was talking about a walk in the park or by the lake for twenty minutes every day.

15. Mr. Smith asked the doctor to listen to him, getting a little angry with his doctor.

16. Mr. Smith went on to say that he was a postman and that he walked for nearly seven hours every day.

17. For a moment the doctor was silent, then he said quietly that Mr. Smith should put out his tongue again.
