Passage Fourteen (K9 level)
1. The Great Fire of London began in the very early morning hours of September 2, 1666. 2. In just four days, the fire destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were made of wood and closely packed together. 3. One hundred thousand people lost their homes, though only a few people died in the fire. 4. The fire started on Sunday morning in the home of the King's baker on Pudding Lane. 5. The baker, along with his wife and children, managed to escape through a window on the roof. 6. A strong wind spread the fire from the bakery to a small hotel next door. 7. From there, the fire quickly spread to Thames Street, marking the beginning of the disaster. 8. By 8 o’clock, three hundred houses were burning. 9. By Monday, nearly a kilometer of the city along the River Thames was on fire. 10. Tuesday was the worst day, as the fire destroyed many famous buildings, including old St. Paul's Cathedral and the Guildhall. 11. Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire in his diary. 12. People threw their belongings into the river to try to save them. 13. Many poor people stayed in their homes until the last possible moment. 14. Birds fell from the sky because of the intense heat. 15. The fire only stopped when the King ordered people to demolish hundreds of buildings in the fire’s path. 16. With nothing left to burn, the fire weakened and finally went out. 17. After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect, wanted to rebuild the city with wider streets and new stone houses. 18. Although the streets remain narrow, he did design more than fifty churches, including the new St. Paul’s Cathedral. 19. While the fire caused great suffering and loss, it helped make London a better place to live: a city built for the future, not just for the past.
