Passage Thirty-three

1. Henry was an office worker in a big city.

2. He worked very hard and enjoyed traveling in his holidays.

3. He usually went to the seaside, but one year he saw an advertisement in a newspaper.

4. The advertisement said that people could enjoy country life, spend a few weeks at West Hill Farm, have good food, fresh air, horse riding, walking, and fishing, and that it would be cheap and interesting.

5. Henry thought that it sounded like a good idea.

6. He decided that he would spend a month at West Hill Farm, thinking he could enjoy horse riding, walking, and fishing, which would make a change from sitting by the seaside and swimming.

7. He wrote to the farmer and told him in the letter that he would like to spend all of July there.

8. Then, on the first of July, he left for West Hill Farm.

9. But four days later, he returned home.

10. Ed, his best friend, asked him what had been wrong with West Hill Farm and whether he hadn’t enjoyed country life.

11. Henry replied that country life had been very good, but there had been another problem.

12. He explained that on the first day he had been there, a sheep had died, and they had had roast mutton for dinner.

13. Ed had asked what had been wrong with that, saying that fresh meat was the best.

14. Henry had said he had known, but on the second day, a cow had died, and they had had roast beef for dinner.

15. Ed had remarked that Henry had been lucky.

16. Henry had told him that on the third day, a pig had died, and they had had roast pork for dinner.

17. He had added that on the fourth day, the farmer had died, and he hadn’t dared to stay for dinner.
