Passage Twenty-nine (K9 level)
1. Every Saturday morning, there is a line of boys and girls on Garden Street. 2. They are all waiting to watch a movie. 3. The movie never begins before eight o'clock. 4. Yet, the boys and girls can't help but arrive earlier each time. 5. They don't mind waiting for a long period at all. 6. One Saturday morning, a particularly interesting film was showing. 7. Tom came running down the street. 8. He wanted to be one of the first to enter. 9. He walked up to the front of the line and pushed his way in. 10. Tom pushed his way right in front of Peter, leaving no one ahead of him. 11. Peter didn’t say a word. 12. Instead, he reached up and took off Tom’s hat. 13. He handed the hat to the boy behind him and told John to pass it on. 14. John passed the hat to the girl behind him. 15. John asked Kate to continue passing it. 16. The hat was quickly passed all the way to Betty at the end of the line. 17. Tom looked at Peter and asked where his hat had gone. 18. Peter pointed down the line. 19. There, at the end of the line, Betty was holding Tom’s hat up. 20. Everyone smiled, but no one said anything. 21. Tom stood there for a while. 22. Then he walked all the way back to Betty. 23. Betty politely handed Tom his hat and told him it was his. 24. Tom still goes to see the films on Saturday mornings, just as before. 25. But now, he walks straight to the end of the line and waits his turn to buy the tickets.
