1. Imagine a classroom missing something long regarded as essential for reading and writing. 2. There are no notebooks, textbooks, or test papers, nor are there any pencils or pens, which often run out of ink at critical moments. 3. More and more schools are working to create what is known as a “paperless classroom.” 4. In these classrooms, students no longer rely on handwriting. 5. Instead, they use handheld or specially-designed computers for all their tasks. 6. Teachers download reading materials from online libraries and distribute them directly to each student’s personal device. 7. Having access to computers also allows students to explore the internet. 8. They can research topics for any subject they are studying, whether it’s mathematics or social studies. 9. Judy Herrell, a high school teacher in Florida, shared how her class used the internet to study Afghanistan during the war more than a year ago. 10. She explained that students could explore every aspect of the country through various websites, from its forests to refugee camps, and said using outdated books was simply not an option. 11. Even exams can now be taken online. 12. At a high school in Tennessee, students complete their tests on personal computers. 13. The teacher records grades on a shared network for students to see and transfers them to an electronic grade book. 14. Transitioning to a paperless classroom significantly reduces paper waste. 15. Stephanie Sorrell, a high school teacher in Kentucky, mentioned she used to hand out approximately 900 sheets of paper to each student every week. 16. She pointed out the environmental and financial savings they could achieve by using computers. 17. However, with such reliance on technology, there is always the risk of technical failures. 18. Therefore, in case of power outages or system malfunctions, traditional paper textbooks are still available for these tech-savvy students.
