Passage Thirty-two

K9 level

1. An eight-year-old girl overheard her parents speaking softly about her younger brother.

2. She understood only that he was gravely ill and that her family couldn’t afford to help him.

3. The doctors had said an expensive operation was his only chance, but her parents had no way to pay for it.

4. When her father told her crying mother that only a miracle could save him, the girl quietly went to her room and retrieved her small stash of savings, counting every coin with care.

5. She then hurried to the nearest drugstore, clutching her money tightly in her small hands.

6. When she reached the counter, the pharmacist asked her kindly what she needed.

7. The girl explained that her little brother was terribly sick, and she was there to buy a miracle to make him better.

8. The pharmacist, confused, asked her what she meant by “a miracle.”

9. With a trembling voice, she shared that her brother Andrew had something bad growing inside his head and that her father had said only a miracle could save him, so she wanted to know the price.

10. The pharmacist, suppressing a smile, told her gently that miracles weren’t something they sold in the store and apologized for not being able to help.

11. Undeterred, the girl offered to find more money if her savings weren’t enough and pleaded with him to tell her how much a miracle would cost.

12. A man dressed in a suit, who had been standing nearby and overheard their conversation, stepped forward and asked the girl what sort of miracle her brother needed.

13. Tearfully, the girl said she didn’t know exactly, only that her brother needed an operation, and her parents couldn’t afford it.

14. She added that she had brought all the money she had in hopes it would be enough.

15. The man gently asked her how much she had, and she told him she had $1.11 but was willing to try to get more if it wasn’t enough.

16. Smiling warmly, the man told her that $1.11 was exactly the price of a miracle for little brothers.

17. He held her hand and asked her to take him to her home so he could meet her brother and speak with her parents to see if he could provide the miracle they needed.

18. That man turned out to be Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a highly skilled and renowned surgeon.

19. The operation he performed was a success, and it wasn’t long before Andrew was healthy and back at home.
