Passage Twenty-three

1. People have different ways to address the energy problem.

2. One method is increasing the production of common energy sources, like coal, oil, and gas.

3. The problem with these sources, however, is that they are not renewable.

4. Another solution is energy conservation, which means using energy more efficiently.

5. In some very cold countries, people build special homes to save energy.

6. They place insulating materials between the inner and outer walls of the house to keep the cold out and the warmth in.

7. The house is heated by the lights, the body heat of the people, and the other appliances in it.

8. Finally, renewable energy sources are used, even though they are often expensive to develop.

9. One form of renewable energy is geothermal energy.

10. In some parts of the world, the temperature of the earth increases by thirty degrees Celsius for every kilometer you go down.

11. At six kilometers, the temperature reaches nearly two hundred degrees.

12. To capture this heat, water is pumped down into the rocks and brought back up to the surface.

13. Heat from the earth is already being used in some countries.
