Passage Twenty-seven

1. It was Sunday, and Tom was spending the day at home.

2. After breakfast, he went outside into the garden to play by himself.

3. There were no other children around, and he was used to playing alone in a peaceful way.

4. He played with Bobby, the dog, enjoying their time together.

5. He climbed up and down the big tree in the yard.

6. Sometimes a bird would fly down and sit on top of the doghouse.

7. Tom found it fun to throw a stone or something similar at the bird.

8. Although he never hit it, he always enjoyed trying to do so.

9. Tom had been in the garden for about half an hour.

10. Suddenly, there was a loud crack, and Tom began to cry.

11. His mother, looking out of the kitchen window, asked him what was wrong.

12. Tom hurried into the kitchen, tears in his eyes.

13. He sobbed and explained that he had broken Bobby's plate, not realizing how fragile it was.

14. His mother comforted him, telling him not to be too upset because they had other plates for Bobby. She asked how the plate had been broken.

15. Tom explained that he had thrown it at a bird, but missed, and it had hit the plate instead.

16. In Tom's hand was his father's gold pocket watch!
