Passage Thirty-four

1. Mr. Brown was going away for a week.

2. Before he left, he told his son that if anyone asked about him, he should say his father was out doing something and would return in a week. Then, he should invite them to sit down and have a cup of tea.

3. His son replied that he understood.

4. But to be sure his son would remember, Mr. Brown wrote these instructions on a piece of paper and gave it to him.

5. His son put it in his pocket, taking it out now and then to look at it.

6. Four days went by, but no one came to visit his father.

7. The boy thought no one would come, and the paper was no longer needed, so he burned it that evening.

8. The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door.

9. The boy opened it.

10. A man stood there and asked where his father was.

11. The boy immediately reached into his pocket to get the piece of paper.

12. He couldn’t find it. Suddenly, he remembered burning it, so he said that it was gone.

13. The man was shocked.

14. He asked when it had happened, because he had seen the boy’s father the week before.

15. The boy answered that the paper had been burned the night before.
