Passage Thirty-five (K9 level)
1. As cities grow, their challenges tend to increase as well. 2. Pollution, traffic congestion, and overcrowded streets are just a few of the issues that arise. 3. One effective solution to these urban problems is the development of city train systems. 4. City trains, which connect different areas, reduce the number of cars and buses on the roads, leading to cleaner air and less crowded streets. 5. In recent decades, cities like Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Shanghai have constructed extensive city train networks. 6. Beijing was the first city in China to build a city train line. 7. The oldest section, stretching from Beijing Zhan to Ping Guo Yuan, opened in 1969. 8. At the time, this line covered a distance of 23.6 kilometers. 9. With Beijing's rapid growth after 1980, the demand for additional train services increased significantly. 10. To address this, a new line was constructed to better serve the city's central areas. 11. This 16-kilometer "circle line" was completed in 1987. 12. Since then, even more train stations and tracks have been added, expanding the total length of Beijing’s train system to over 50 kilometers. 13. For the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing’s city trains will play a crucial role. 14. It is expected that most spectators attending the Games will rely on these trains to travel between venues.
