Passage Thirty-two (K4 level) 1. An eight-year-old child
heard her parents talking about her little brother. 2. All she knew was that he
was very sick and they had no money. 3. Only a very expensive
operation could save him now, and there was no one to lend them the money. 4. When she heard her daddy
say to her tearful mother that only a miracle could save him now, the little
girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted
it carefully. 5. She hurried to a
drugstore with the money in her hand. 6. The salesman asked her
what she wanted. 7. The girl answered that
it was for her little brother, who was really, really sick, and she wanted to
buy a miracle. 8. The salesman, puzzled,
asked her what she meant. 9. The girl explained that
her brother Andrew had something bad growing inside his head and her daddy said
only a miracle could save him, so she asked how much a miracle cost. 10. The salesman said with
a smile that they didn’t sell miracles there and he was sorry. 11. The girl insisted that
if her money wasn’t enough, she could try and get some more and asked the
salesman to just tell her how much it cost. 12. A well-dressed man, who
overheard the conversation, asked what kind of miracle her brother needed. 13. The girl, with her eyes
full of tears, said that she didn’t know but added that her brother was really
sick and her mum had said he needed an operation. 14. She explained further
that her daddy couldn’t pay for it, so she had brought all her money. 15. The man asked her how
much she had, and she replied that she had $1.11 but could try to get some
more. 16. The man smiled and said
that $1.11 was the price of a miracle for little brothers. 17. He took the girl’s hand
and told her to take him to where she lived because he wanted to see her
brother and meet her parents to check if he had the kind of miracle they
needed. 18. That well-dressed man
turned out to be Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. 19. The operation was
successful, and it wasn’t long before Andrew was home again. 生词表(New
