Passage Thirty-four

（K4 level）

1. Mr. Brown was going away for a week.

2. Before he left, he told his son that if anyone asked for him, he could tell him that his father had been out doing something and would be back in a week, and then he should be sure to ask him to sit down for a cup of tea.

3. His son replied that it was OK.

4. But he was afraid his son couldn't remember this, so he wrote these words down on a piece of paper and gave it to him.

5. His son put it into his small pocket, took it out and looked at it every now and then.

6. Four days passed, but no one came to see his father.

7. The boy thought that there was no man to come and that the piece of paper was of no more use for him, so he burnt it that evening.

8. The next afternoon, someone knocked at the door.

9. The boy opened it.

10. A man was standing at the door and asked where his father was.

11. The boy put his hand into his pocket at once and looked for the piece of paper.

12. He could not find it. He suddenly remembered he had burnt it, so he shouted that it was no more.

13. The man was very surprised.

14. He asked when it had happened, as he had met the boy's father the previous week.

15. The boy replied that it had been burnt the previous evening.
