Passage Thirty-six

1. She asked a stranger if he liked her dress.

2. She said with tears in her eyes that her mum had made it just for her.

3. The stranger responded that he thought it was very pretty and asked her why she was crying.

4. The little girl answered in a low voice that after her mum had made her the dress, she had gone away.

5. She explained that her dad said her mum was now up in heaven with her grandfather.

6. The woman finally realized why the girl was crying.

7. She felt very sorry for the little girl and gently held the child in her arms.

8. Then, suddenly, the little girl did something a bit strange.

9. She stopped crying, walked back from the woman, and began to sing.

10. She sang softly, and it was the sweetest sound the woman had ever heard, almost like the song of a very small bird.

11. After the child stopped singing, she told the lady that her mum often sang that song to her before going away and had asked her to sing it whenever she started crying so it would make her stop.

12. She said loudly that it worked, and now her eyes were dry.

13. Just before the lady wanted to leave, the girl showed her a spot on her dress and explained that it was where her mum had kissed her dress. She pointed to another spot and said it was another kiss, and added there were more here and there.

14. She said that her mum had told her she put all those kisses on her dress so she would forget her sadness.

15. Then the lady realized that she wasn’t just looking at a dress but at a mother.

16. She understood that the mother knew she was going away and would not be there to kiss away her daughter’s hurts any longer.

17. So the mother had given all her love to her beautiful daughter and put it into the dress.

18. Now her child was wearing it so proudly.

19. The lady no longer saw a little girl wearing a simple dress.

20. She saw a child wrapped in her mother’s love.
