Chapter 4:A New Life at Lowood School The carriage traveled for a long time and stopped in front of a dark building. "This is Lowood School," the driver said. I looked at the old building with fear in my heart. I was brought before a stern-looking woman. She introduced herself as the headmistress of the school, Miss Rochester. She looked at me for a moment and said nothing. She led me into a large empty room. The room was empty, with only a few simple tables and chairs. I couldn't help but feel even more lonely. Then, she asked me to sit down and told me the rules of the school. I listened to every word she said, feeling uneasy. She emphasized that strict discipline must be followed here. Then, she took me to the dormitory. The other girls were already waiting for me in the dormitory. They looked at me as though they were sizing me up. I was assigned a bed in the corner. The sheets were simple and looked old. I lay down, filled with doubt in my heart. |
