Chapter 23: A Garden ConfessionThat evening, the weather was hot, and the sky was full of dark clouds. I walked into the garden to get some fresh air. Suddenly, I heard Mr. Rochester calling behind me. “Don’t go, Jane. I was looking for you,” he said. We walked slowly along the garden path. He looked serious. I felt he had something important to say. “Will you leave Thornfield?” he asked. “If you are going to marry, I must go,” I answered. He was silent for a moment, then suddenly said: “The person I want to marry is you, Jane. No one else.” I looked at him in surprise, thinking he was joking. “Are you testing me?” I asked. “No, I am serious,” he said. “You make me happy. I want you to stay with me forever.” My heart was full of joy, but I could hardly believe it. “I am only a plain governess,” I said. “To me, you are the best,” he replied. Thunder rolled in the distance, and the wind began to blow. He took my hand, and we stood under the tree. “Will you marry me?” he asked. “I will,” I said softly. At that moment, a flash of lightning lit up the sky. Heavy rain began to fall, and we ran back into the house. I did not know then that the storm had brought a test of fate. |
