Chapter 28: In a Strange LandAfter I left Thornfield Hall, I began my journey alone. I had no destination, no friends, and no family to rely on. For days, I used my little money to buy bread and travel. At last, I was exhausted and penniless. I walked into a strange village, hoping to find some work. But no one wanted to hire a poor, lonely woman. Hunger made me dizzy, and I nearly collapsed by the road. A kind farm woman gave me a piece of bread, which I ate gratefully. When night came, I hid behind a rock to stay out of the rain. The wind was cold and wet, and I could not stop shivering. I prayed to God not to let me die in this place. I believed He would open a new path for me. The next day, I kept walking until I came to a small house. I knocked, and a young woman opened the door, surprised to see me. “Please, may I have some water?” I almost whispered. She quickly helped me inside and laid me near the fire. At last, I was safe and fell asleep in the warmth. It was a new beginning, though I did not yet know what would come. After the storm, I entered a world both strange and gentle. My story was not yet finished. |
