Weeks passed, and I had fully adapted to life at the new school.

Though the school was poor, the children's laughter brought me joy.

St. John visited from time to time, still quiet but thoughtful. 一天傍晚，他又来看我。
One evening, he came to see me again.
“简，”他说，“我有事一直藏在心里。”
“Jane,” he said, “there is something I’ve kept to myself.”
“我准备成为一名传教士，前往印度。”
“I plan to become a missionary and go to India.”
我吃了一惊，却为他的决心感到敬佩。
I was surprised, but I admired his resolve. “我需要一位妻子，一位可以同行的伴侣，”他说。
“I need a wife, someone who can go with me,” he said.
他认真地看着我：“简，我希望是你。”
He looked at me seriously. “Jane, I hope that person is you.”
我心里一震，感到意外，也有些疑惑。
My heart trembled—I was surprised and uncertain.
“您是出于爱吗？”我轻声问。
“Do you ask this out of love?” I asked quietly. “不是爱的情感，而是使命的需要。”他回答。
“Not from love, but from duty,” he replied.
“你坚强、有信仰，是最合适的人。”
“You are strong and faithful. You are the right person.”
我低下头，心里却升起一种抗拒。
I lowered my head, but felt resistance rise within me.
我不能用婚姻换取牺牲自我的奉献。
I could not trade marriage for self-denial and duty. “我很愿意帮助你，但我不能做你没有爱的妻子。”
“I am willing to help you, but I cannot be your wife without love.”
他沉默了片刻，眼中有光，也有失望。
He was silent for a moment. There was light and disappointment in his eyes.
我知道，他不会轻易放弃这个请求。
I knew he would not give up easily.
