The Price of Freedom
1. The Lion King led all the animals on a grand march to defeat Reynard the Fox. 2. Reynard’s nephew Grimbart came in secret and warned, “Uncle, run! The King and his army are coming!” 3. But Reynard remained calm. “I’m not afraid. I’ve already prepared a plan.” 4. The King ordered his cannons to blast Reynard’s house. 5. But Reynard had set up nets that caught all the flying cannonballs. 6. Seeing the house untouched, the King shouted, “Attack!” 7. The fox family hurled the caught stones back at the attacking soldiers. 8. The first wave—bears—ran away in fear. 9. The wolf and the cat led another charge—but fell into straw-pit traps. 10. As all soldiers surged forward, Reynard threw out a large sack. 11. The King thought it was treasure. “Open it!” 12. The Bear untied the sack—and out swarmed a cloud of furious bees! 13. The King and his army scattered, screaming in chaos. 14. That night, Reynard crept into the camp, tied up the Lion King, and stole his rifle. 15. At dawn, Reynard fired the gun and shouted, “I’ve captured the Lion!” 16. The animals thought a hunter had arrived—they fled in panic. 17. Then Reynard pretended to rescue the King by untying him. 18. The Lion, panting, growled, “It was all a trick!” 19. “Reynard, you are too clever. I shall crown you!” 20. But Reynard bowed his head. “I want nothing. I only wish to be a free fox.” 21. The King sighed and signed a decree. “From now on, Reynard—you are free.” 22. Reynard left the palace with his wife and children, walking into the sunlight of the deep woods. 23. Freedom—at last—was the reward of his life of cunning. |
