Reynard the Fox Plays Dead to Steal Fish

1．

在一个寒冷的冬日，天空阴沉沉的，列那狐家里的食橱空空如也。

On a cold winter day, the sky was gray, and Reynard the Fox's pantry was completely empty.

妻子海梅林愁眉苦脸，孩子们也即将因饥饿而吵闹。

His wife Hermeline looked worried, and the children were about to cry from hunger.

To feed his family, Reynard had no choice but to go out and look for food.

Unable to resist, Reynard immediately came up with a clever plan.

He ran to the middle of the road, spread out his limbs, shut his eyes, and stuck out his tongue—pretending to be dead.

鱼贩子们见路上有只狐狸，停下车查看。

The fishmongers saw a fox lying in the road and stopped their cart to check.

他们踢了踢，拧了拧，还把他翻过来抖搂了几下。

They kicked him, twisted him, even flipped him over and shook him a bit.

Reynard didn’t move at all, so they assumed he was dead and tossed him next to a basket of fish at the back of the cart.

He landed right beside a pile of herring, quietly bit open the basket, and began to feast.

他吃了至少三十条鲱鱼，终于吃饱了。

He ate at least thirty herrings and finally felt full.

Next, he bit open another basket—it was full of eels.

他尝了一条鳗鱼，味道不错，于是选了几条最鲜美的。

He tasted one and found it delicious, so he picked out the finest ones.

他用牙齿在鳗鱼身上穿孔，把它们串成一条项链，挂在脖子上。

He pierced the eels with his teeth, strung them together like a necklace, and hung them around his neck.

他趁着车子轻轻颠簸时，从鱼筐后面悄悄滑下地面。

When the cart bumped slightly, he quietly slid down to the ground from behind the basket.

Though careful, he made a small sound, which caught the fishmongers’ attention.

Once on the ground, Reynard shouted, “Thanks for the fish, my friends! My fur’s worth more than five francs—I’ll keep it myself!”

鱼贩跳下车想追，可他早已跑远，带着鱼回家去了。

The fishmongers jumped down to chase him, but he had already vanished, running home with his prize.

妻子和孩子们看到他带回的鳗鱼，高兴得欢呼起来。

His wife and children cheered with joy when they saw the eels he brought back.

At last, the whole family enjoyed a hearty meal of eel together.
