Tricking the Wolf and Escaping Without a Tail

1．

寒冬深夜，寒风凛冽，雪地上空无一人。

On a freezing winter night, the snow-covered land was deserted.

列那狐和狼伊桑走在一起，狼又饿又冷，埋怨列那不够朋友。

Reynard and the wolf, Ysengrim, walked together. The wolf was cold and hungry, complaining that Reynard never helped a friend.

3．

列那装出热情，说：“好兄弟，我带你去钓鱼，保你吃个痛快。”

Reynard feigned kindness and said, “Dear brother, I’ll take you fishing. You’ll eat to your heart’s content.”

4．

他们来到一个冰封的池塘边，列那说：‘今晚鱼儿都躲在水底，我们得想个特别的办法。’

They reached a frozen pond. Reynard said, 'Tonight the fish are deep underwater. We’ll need a special method.'

他拿出一根绳子，把一个木桶牢牢拴在狼的尾巴上，然后让狼把木桶一起伸进冰洞中钓鱼。

He took out a rope, tied a wooden bucket securely to the wolf’s tail, and told him to lower it all into the ice hole to fish.

“别动，越冷越好，这样鱼才会上钩。”列那一本正经地说。

“Don’t move. The colder it gets, the better the fish will bite,” Reynard said seriously.

狼信以为真，把尾巴和木桶整个伸进冰洞，一动不动地蹲着等鱼上钩。

The wolf believed him and lowered his tail and the bucket into the icy water, squatting motionless, waiting for fish.

列那却悄悄溜走，跑去叫来了村里的猎人。

But Reynard quietly slipped away and ran to alert the village hunters.

猎人们提着棍棒赶来，狼却因为木桶冻在冰里，怎么也拔不出来。

The hunters came with sticks, but the bucket had frozen in the ice—he couldn’t pull it out.

眼看猎人越走越近，狼吓得猛地一挣——

As the hunters drew closer, the terrified wolf gave a mighty yank—

“啊！”他断了尾巴，惨叫一声，拖着血迹逃入了树林。

“Ahh!” He screamed as his tail tore off. He ran bleeding into the woods.

猎人只看到一个冻住的木桶和一条狼尾巴留在冰洞里，列那早已不见踪影。

The hunters found only a frozen bucket and a wolf tail in the hole. Reynard had vanished without a trace.

13．

第二天，森林里传开了这个故事，动物们听后哭笑不得。

The next day, word of the tale spread through the forest. The animals didn’t know whether to laugh or sigh.

狼伊桑因此成了丑闻人物，再也不敢轻信列那的话。

Ysengrim became a laughingstock and never dared trust Reynard again.

列那狐却回到家中，得意洋洋地讲述他“如何让狼失去尾巴还多了一个木桶”。

Reynard returned home smugly, boasting how he had made the wolf lose his tail and gain a wooden bucket.

几天后，狼伊桑怒气未消，偷偷溜到列那家门口。

A few days later, still furious, Ysengrim the wolf crept up to Reynard’s home.

17．

趁列那外出不在，他闯进屋里，打了列那的孩子，还推倒了他的妻子海梅林。

While Reynard was away, he stormed into the house, struck Reynard’s children, and pushed down his wife Hermeline.

18．

孩子们吓得大哭，海梅林受了伤，邻居们都跑来看热闹。

The children cried in fear, Hermeline was hurt, and the neighbors came to see what had happened.

19．

这场冲突让森林里的动物们议论纷纷，大家都说这对冤家迟早要出大事。

The conflict caused a stir among the forest animals—everyone said these two enemies were bound to end in disaster.
