Chapter 8: The Caterpillar’s Advice
Alice walks away alone again. She whispers, “Who am I in Wonderland?” A melody rises slowly in the distance. Alice follows the sound. She sees a blue caterpillar. The caterpillar is sitting lazily on a mushroom. He smokes a hookah and blows smoke rings. The caterpillar sings with a lazy voice. He slowly looks up and sees Alice. The caterpillar asks, “Who… are… you?” Alice stammers, “I… I don’t know.” She says, “Here I grow big and small, I am not myself anymore.” The caterpillar squints and says coldly, “Then who are you?” Alice grows more confused and shakes her head. The caterpillar continues with riddles and questions. Alice says, “You are making me more and more confused!” The caterpillar finally says, “One side of the mushroom will make you grow taller.” He adds, “The other side will make you grow shorter.” Alice says in surprise, “Oh! That’s it!” The caterpillar shakes his body and turns into a colorful butterfly. The butterfly flies away gracefully. Alice stands by the mushroom, stunned. She says, “The mushroom is the key!” She carefully breaks off a piece of mushroom. She decides to try it, to learn how to control her size. |
