Chapter 11: The Mad Tea PartyThe Mad Hatter and the March Hare eagerly push a teacup in front of Alice. They say, “Here, have some tea!” Alice feels flattered and is just about to drink. Suddenly, the Mad Hatter leans over mysteriously. He asks, “You seem to have a question. Will you tell us?” He adds, “Begin at the beginning… but stop just before the end!” The March Hare nods seriously in agreement. Alice has no choice but to follow their request. She says, “At first, I was sitting by the riverbank with Dinah…” The Mad Hatter interrupts at once, “Dinah? Who is that?” Alice explains, “She is my pet cat.” The Dormouse, hearing the word “cat,” trembles all over. He quickly dives into the teapot and does not dare come out. The March Hare and the Mad Hatter also panic. The whole scene becomes chaotic. Alice only wanted to tell a story. But the topic of “cat” ruins everything, and the place is in chaos. Before Alice can recover, the Mad Hatter suddenly stands up. He announces loudly, “Time is up! Change places!” Then the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the Dormouse all jump up. They carry cups, drag teapots, and push around noisily. Finally, they sit down again on the other side. They look serious but seem completely absurd. Alice is puzzled by this sudden “rule.” She says, “The table is so big, there are plenty of empty seats!” But the Mad Hatter insists, “No room! No room!” Alice slowly loses her patience. She suddenly sees the White Rabbit passing by in the distance. Alice says to herself, “This is the silliest party I have ever been to!” Without hesitation, she runs out and leaves the mad tea party behind. |
