Chapter 5 · Learning to Fly
The little mouse kept thinking about how to make Dumbo happy again. One day, he said to Dumbo, “Let’s go and watch the new circus show.” Dumbo hesitated a bit, but he followed him anyway. In the arena, other animals were practicing their tricks. The little mouse suddenly had an idea. “You can perform too! Maybe with your big ears!” Dumbo said in surprise, “My ears? But they’re too big.” “Exactly! That’s what makes you special,” said the mouse with a wink. The mouse led him to a high platform. Dumbo looked down and trembled with fear. “Don’t be afraid! I’ll catch you!” shouted the little mouse. Dumbo took a deep breath, opened his big ears, and jumped. At first, he fell straight down. The mouse shouted, “Flap your ears! Flap them!” Dumbo flapped his ears hard and suddenly felt the wind lifting him up. He was flying! The little mouse jumped for joy, “You did it!” Dumbo flew higher and higher, steadier and steadier. The wind rushed past his big ears. He looked down at the circus and saw the world was so beautiful for the first time. The audience stared at him in amazement, and cheers filled the sky. From that moment on, Dumbo was no longer afraid of being different. He finally understood that every “flaw” given by God has its meaning. The mouse ran beside him and shouted, “You’re Dumbo, the flying elephant!” Dumbo smiled his brightest smile.
