The Journey and the Monsters

Their boat moved forward on the sea.

The sun rose, and the wind blew softly.

Maui taught Moana how to steer, read the stars, and follow the wind.

Moana learned fast and loved the feeling of freedom.

Suddenly, many small boats appeared under the sea.

They were coconut-shell monsters — the Kakamora.

They fiercely chased Moana’s boat.

Maui said, “They want the heart!”

Moana held the Heart of Te Fiti tightly.

The monsters climbed onto the boat.

Moana hit one with her paddle.

Maui swung his rope and knocked down more.

They worked well together.

Finally, Moana held up the glowing heart.

The Kakamora were scared by the light and fell into the sea.

They were safe at last.

Moana smiled, “We make a good team!”

Maui smiled too, but he was thinking about his fishhook.

They kept sailing and reached a shining underwater mountain.

Maui said, “My fishhook is down there, guarded by the monster Tamatoa.”

“Who is Tamatoa?” Moana asked.

“A big crab who loves shiny things.”

So they dove underwater.

Under the sea was a giant cave full of jewels.

It glittered everywhere.

Tamatoa appeared — he was bigger than a house!

He had a shiny shell and sang a strange song.

Maui tried to grab his fishhook.

But the hook was stuck on Tamatoa’s shell.

Moana quickly shouted, “Look! There’s something shinier!”

Tamatoa turned around.

Maui quickly took back his hook.

They swam out of the cave fast.

Tamatoa shouted angrily behind them.

Back on the boat, Maui looked at his hook and smiled.

He tried to shapeshift but became half a shark.

Moana laughed so hard she couldn’t stop.

Maui laughed too, “I still need practice.”

Their adventure had only just begun.
