Chapter Two: Learning to Survive
The sun rose, the jungle woke up, and little Tarzan was growing fast. He copied the gorillas, jumping from branch to branch. Kala always smiled as she watched him fall and get back up. Kerchak still didn’t trust the human child. “He is not one of us,” said Kerchak. Tarzan felt sad; he wanted to prove he belonged. One day, the young gorilla Terk took him to play in the mud. They accidentally bothered the elephant, Tantor. Tantor screamed loudly, startling the whole jungle. Kerchak rushed over and scolded Tarzan. “This is your fault!” Tarzan ran away into the deep jungle in tears. He looked at his hands and saw they were not like a gorilla’s. He asked Kala, “Why am I different from them?” Kala gently placed her hand on his chest. “You see? Our hearts are the same,” she said. Her words gave Tarzan new courage. He began to train hard to be as strong as a gorilla. He learned to climb the tallest trees and dodge leopards. Day by day, his moves became faster and smoother. Tarzan had finally become a true warrior of the jungle.
