Chapter Five: Conflict and Truth

Jane brought Tarzan back to camp, and Professor Porter was thrilled.

“Amazing! He really lives with the gorillas!”

Clayton, however, watched Tarzan with cold eyes.

In his mind, he was planning how to find the gorillas’ nesting place.

Jane taught Tarzan more human words and knowledge.

Tarzan learned quickly and even walked like a human.

Jane drew pictures of their happy days together.

She said, “The human world is beautiful too. You should see it.”

Tarzan looked down at his hands.

“Who am I? Where do I belong?” he whispered.

Kala took him back to the old cabin.

It was the home of his parents.

Tarzan saw a torn photo—it showed him as a baby.

Kala said tearfully, “You come from their world.”

Tarzan was silent for a long time, then whispered, “Thank you, Mother.”

He decided to take Jane to meet his gorilla family.

Kala was worried Kerchak would be angry.

When they neared the valley, Kerchak appeared.

He roared in anger, “You’ve brought danger to us!”

Tarzan stood between them, feeling torn between two worlds for the first time.
