Chapter Four: The Fire Ignites Murron’s death meant William could never return to his old life. The cruelty of the English soldiers did not stop. Instead, they became even more ruthless. William understood that running away no longer mattered. He began to step toward conflict instead of avoiding it. When the soldiers entered the village again, William did not step back. He raised his weapon and faced the oppressors directly. This time, he was not alone. Some villagers stood beside him. Fear was still there, but anger was stronger. Fighting broke out in the village. The soldiers did not expect resistance. William charged at the front, leading through action. His courage spread to those around him. For the first time, the villagers realized they were not powerless. The soldiers were driven away, and the village was briefly free. The victory was not perfect, but it mattered. The news quickly traveled farther. More and more people began to talk about rebellion. The fire of Scotland’s anger was being lit.
