Chapter Five: The Rise of a Hero
William’s resistance soon became more than a single village’s story. People across Scotland began to hear his name. They heard of a man who dared to stand against English rule. More villagers came to find William on their own. They came with fear, but also with hope. William did not call himself a leader. Yet people naturally stood beside him. He taught them how to fight and how to stand together. Farmers, shepherds, and ordinary people formed groups. They were no longer fighting only for themselves. They began to fight for freedom. The English army underestimated this force. They believed them to be nothing more than a mob. But in battle, everything changed. William’s courage made people fearless. His tactics were unexpected. The English army suffered its first defeat in open combat. Victory spread quickly across Scotland. People began to call William a hero. And he himself thought only of moving forward.
