Chapter Nine: Trial and Sacrifice
William was taken to London in chains, entering the cold city. Crowds filled the streets, some silent, some angry. The king’s banners hung high, symbols of absolute power. William was brought into the hall to face trial. The trial was unfair; the verdict was already decided. He was accused of treason, murder, and rebellion. William did not defend himself. He knew the truth no longer mattered. The judges demanded he beg for mercy. William lifted his head, his eyes steady. He said he had never sworn loyalty to the English king. The hall erupted in shock. The punishment began, tearing through his body. Some in the crowd turned away, unable to watch. But William never bowed. He thought of Murron and of freedom. In his final moments, he chose to stand firm. With his last strength, he cried out his belief. The cry shook everyone present. And the seed of freedom was planted forever.
