Chapter Seven: Defeat and Resolve

那场失败，并没有结束苏格兰的战争。
That defeat did not end Scotland’s war.

What it left behind were deeper wounds.

战场上，许多士兵倒下，再也没有站起来。
On the battlefield, many soldiers fell and never rose again.

幸存的人拖着疲惫的身体返回家园。
Those who survived returned home, exhausted and wounded.

村庄里充满了哀悼的哭声。
The villages were filled with sounds of mourning.

威廉亲眼看见了失败带来的代价。
William witnessed the cost of defeat with his own eyes.

每一张失去亲人的脸，都让他沉默。
Every face that had lost a loved one left him silent.

他为带领他们走上这条路而感到愧疚。
He felt guilty for leading them onto this path.

有人开始低声质疑他的决定。
Some began to quietly question his decisions.

They wondered whether resistance truly mattered.

Others quietly left the camp at night.

William did not stop them.

Facing those who stayed, William did not defend himself.

The English army remained powerful and ruthless.

Yet in the eyes of ordinary people, William still stood.

Not because he had never failed, but because after failure, he chose to endure.
